Lesson 3: Communicating through Blackboard

Introduction

Communication is important! Lesson 3 teaches you how to communicate through Blackboard. You will learn how to post and reply to a message on the discussion board, find your classmates using the roster feature, and send e-mails to classmates and your instructor.

Learning Objectives

After completing this lesson, you will be able to do the following:

3.1: Post and Reply to Messages on the Discussion Board

This demonstration shows you the main way to communicate through Blackboard. On the discussion board, you can collaborate, express opinions, and share ideas by creating a new thread or replying to an existing thread.


3.2: Get to Know Your Classmates

This tutorial shows you how to access your class roster. The class roster contains the names, photos, e-mail addresses, and personal information of your classmates. You can customize your search by student name, e-mail, or user name. You can also list everyone and browse through student home pages to get to know your classmates.

3.3: Communicate with Your Classmates and Instructor

This is an image.

In this demonstration, you'll learn how to send e-mails to your classmates and your instructor. The send e-mail tool allows you to send e-mails to all users, groups, teaching assistants, students, and instructors. Alternatively, you can select specific users and groups.


Test Your Knowledge

Task 1: Using the Discussion Board

  1. Post a new message to the class discussion board and tell the class something interesting about yourself.
  2. Reply to an existing thread and ask a classmate a question.

Task 2: Find a Classmate and Send E-mail

  1. Locate a student using the roster feature.
  2. Send that student an e-mail using the send e-mail tool.
